The Club
Click this link for more info about the next club night.
The Club night is run by adults with disabilities and welcomes
everyone.
We aim to put on 2 or 3 club nights each year. We have places
on workshops available in many areas including:
Video editing and VJamming training, the Funky house band
rehearsals with performance on the night, visual arts workshops
looking at design and fashion, experimental performance and
DJ'ing. If you want to join a workshop or you want to get
involved in how we run and organise the club please get in
touch via the Contact Us page.
"Fantastic!…Next time we shall bring as many of the residents
as we can." - Care worker.
The steering group behind the club night, (made up of young
people with disabilites from across Cambridgeshire) have
really taken control of the creative process and product over the
course of this project. This process began through the setting
up of a 12 week DJ Skills course, (covering mixing, lighting rigs
and health and safety); club school training (looking at issues of
management and presentation); 'Popstar' training (writing and
recording tracks to perform live on the club night), and Large
Scale Art workshops to make UV drapes and decorations.
They met first in June 2001 and team spirit has flourished since
then in monthly meetings, working together to plan the club
nights in their entirety.
"I thought the CD would sound like a strangled cat, but it
didn't!" - Steering group member
The Future:
This ground breaking project is now a regular club night, taking
place three times per year. We are expanding the opportunities
for involvement open to young people with learning difficulties in
the county with such programmes as our new Percussion
Group held in our newly refurbished portacabin (many thanks to
those involved in the refit). DreamCatchers (the Funky band)
are recording new songs for release and we are now facilitating
session in four schools across Cambridgeshire.
New opportunities like the Funky Flamingo TV project will
provide opportunities for video editing and Vjamming training.
Funky Flamingo on Tour will require more Band Development
workshops leading to live musical performance, experimental
performance work as well as the ongoing recording sessions.
The project helps the participants increase their self-
confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills.
Lifting the lid on the groups' talents, the project gives carers,
helpers and parents a chance to be proudly amazed. The club
nights themselves are an unmissable opportunity for people
who feel unable to go to other club nights, to soak up the
atmosphere of a real club night, meet others and get involved in
future activities.
Funky Flamingo clubnights usually take place at The
Junction club but we also go 'on tour' taking the show on
the road. In recent years we have been to Wisbech and
Ely.
The clubnights stage all the talent involving Djs, Vjs,
Popstars, Impersonators (Elvis, Tom Jones, Buddy Holly)
and of course the legendary funky band recently
renamed 'DreamCatchers'.
